Friends in the City Foundation mission is to provide youth mentoring and educational resources that impacts urban communities. Our Beauty Boot Camp Program brings our vision to life; being a thought partner within high need communities, and providing programming which empowers youth, enhance the quality of education, and embraces the richness of the communities we serve.

Beauty Bootcamp aims to empower young women in Chicago from the inside out.   In educational systems, concepts like self-esteem, personal health, and career readiness are often not fostered in tandem. When the skills necessary to positive development in are not fostered, educators often see physical and verbal violence, attitudes of isolation and withdrawal, and self-destructive behavior among young women. Beauty Bootcamp was conceptualized because these skills were not being addressed, but the behavioral outcomes being expressed were not being properly addressed as well. There is a tendency to diabolize these young women without considering the root causes of their behavior. Through mentorship, one-on-one counseling and safe group spaces, we believe that we are undertaking a necessary task of providing both skill development and encouraging healing.

In addition to our mentoring program mentioned above we provide  college scholarships; Darius Nix Opportunity Scholarship,  and the Alex G. Gilbert Jr. Scholarship awarded to one deserving student each year.

The Opportunity Scholarship is awarded to individuals with a GPA of 2.0 and that demonstrate the ability to achieve a college degree. Lastly, our Alex G. Gilbert Jr. scholarship will be awarded to individuals that were incarcerated and looking for a second start in life.

Donations from private donors and public fundraising  allow us to carry out our mission.
