The Gilbert Scholarship


The Alex G. Gilbert  Jr. Scholarship has been established to further the education of men of color who have spent time incarcerated. This scholarship can be used toward tuition to complete post-secondary educational efforts: trade school, community college, or a four year university. The scholarship will be awarded to the enrolled student’s school on their behalf . The school must be an accredited school in Illinois.


Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Be a U.S Citizen and resident of Illinois.

  2. Must show proof of enrollment.

  3. Demonstrate financial need based on the federal and poverty guidelines.

  4. Write a letter stating why you deserve the scholarship.

  5. Must have official high school transcripts or G.E.D test results

  6. Must have three letters of recommendation

  • Submit all required documents at the same time

Award Amount: $500 to $1,000


Opportunity Scholarship

Scholarship Description

The Opportunity Scholarship  is awarded annually to a high school senior that has been accepted into a 4 year college/university. This individual must exhibit a great deal of interpersonal skills that would enable them to become a successful college graduate.  These skills should be represented and shown through involvement in community service programs and extracurricular activities.


Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Be a U.S Citizen and resident of Illinois.

  2. Possess a 2.5 G.P.A or better.

  3. Must have a college acceptance letter on school letterhead.

  4. Must have  official high school transcripts.

  5. Need three recommendation letters.

How to Apply:

  • Complete and submit application.

  • Must write and submit a 1,000 word essay answering the question: Why is community service important?

  • Submit all documents required, at the same time.

Award Amount: $1,000
